Erstwhile House of Representatives member, Farouk Lawan is set for a return to the National Assembly ahead of the 2027 general elections, in what could mark a landmark and most closely watched political comebacks in Nigeria’s evolving electoral landscape.
Lawan, who previously represented the Bagwai/Shanono Federal Constituency in the House of Representatives, has regained his civil and political rights following the completion of legal processes arising from his conviction on bribery-related charges.
Fresh political calculations within the ruling All Progressives Congress have now brought the former lawmaker back into contention. He has successfully scaled the party’s internal screening process and emerged as the preferred candidate of party stakeholders from Bagwai Local Government Area and Shanono Local Government Area for the 2027 contest.
His renewed political push has stirred conversations across political circles in Kano State, where supporters argue that his legislative experience, grassroots reach and longstanding familiarity with constituency dynamics could prove decisive as parties begin early manoeuvres ahead of the next electoral cycle.
Lawan was once regarded as one of the most prominent lawmakers from northern Nigeria. During his years in the National Assembly, he built a reputation as a vocal parliamentarian and was especially visible during debates around public accountability, governance reforms and oversight of federal institutions.
His political career, however, suffered a dramatic setback following the 2012 fuel subsidy bribery scandal that became one of the most talked-about corruption cases in recent parliamentary history. The controversy, which grew out of the House probe into the fuel subsidy regime, placed Lawan at the centre of national attention and eventually culminated in legal proceedings that led to his conviction.
Despite that setback, his latest emergence suggests that political structures within his constituency may be willing to reopen the door. Party stakeholders in Bagwai and Shanono are understood to have rallied around his candidacy, citing political experience, name recognition and deep local networks as factors behind their endorsement.
Political observers say the development underscores the fluid nature of Nigerian politics, where rehabilitation, renewed alliances and constituency calculations often reshape the fortunes of public figures.
With the 2027 elections still some distance away, Lawan’s re-entry has already added an early layer of intrigue to the battle for representation in Bagwai/Shanono — and could yet become one of the notable comeback stories to watch in Kano politics.
