The Federal Government has approved Tuesday, August 25, 2026, as a public holiday for the celebration of Eid ul Mawlid, which marks the birth of Prophet Muhammad.
The Minister of Interior, Olubunmi Tunji-Ojo, announced the holiday on Friday in a statement signed by the ministry’s Permanent Secretary, Dr Magdalene Ajani.
Tunji-Ojo congratulated Muslims in Nigeria and around the world while urging citizens to use the occasion to reflect on the values associated with the life and teachings of the Prophet.
“Every Eid ul Mawlid gives us reason to pause and draw lessons from a life defined by compassion, humility and service to others,” the minister said.
“These are qualities our nation needs now more than ever, and I encourage every Nigerian, not just our Muslim brothers and sisters, to reflect on them,” he added.
The minister also urged Nigerians to make prayers for peace and national unity part of the celebration, noting that building and preserving cohesion requires the contribution of everyone.
He called on citizens to mark the occasion peacefully and responsibly, with consideration and respect for people of different backgrounds.
Tunji-Ojo wished Muslim faithful a peaceful and fulfilling Eid ul Mawlid celebration.
He also reiterated the Federal Government’s commitment to safeguarding lives and property while supporting efforts aimed at maintaining peace and stability across the country.
The declaration means government offices and other institutions affected by the public holiday will observe the break on Tuesday, August 25, as Muslims across the country commemorate the occasion.
