President Tinubu Pays Emotional Tribute To ‘Fearless Democracy Activist,’ Alhaji Kola Oseni

President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has mourned the passing of Alhaji Ganiyu Kolapo Oseni, describing him as a trusted political mentor, loyal ally, fearless democracy activist, and a brother who has a big influence on his political endeavor.

In a special State House statement issued on Friday, President Tinubu said he received the news of Oseni’s passing with profound sadness, noting that while the elder statesman may have departed this life, the memories they shared and the remarkable legacy he left behind would continue to inspire generations.

The President described the late Oseni as a visionary administrator, accomplished statesman, progressive politician, and trailblazer whose exceptional leadership, foresight, and relentless commitment to public service distinguished him throughout his lifetime.

According to Tinubu, Oseni’s remarkable contributions to the political development of Lagos and Nigeria dated back to the Second Republic, when he served as Organising Secretary of the Unity Party of Nigeria led by the late Obafemi Awolowo in Lagos State.

The President noted that Oseni also played a foundational role in the establishment of the Lagos State Printing Corporation, adding that his enduring impact was recently recognised with the dedication of the corporation’s central mosque in his honour.

Reflecting on their decades-long relationship, Tinubu said Oseni was far more than a political associate.

“To me, however, he was much more than that. He was a leader, my ally, my comrade, a friend and a brother rolled into one,” the President stated.

Tinubu revealed that it was Oseni who introduced him into active politics and stood firmly behind him, alongside other progressive leaders, during his successful campaigns to become the Senator representing Lagos West and later Governor of Lagos State.

The President recalled the numerous sacrifices they made together in the struggle to restore democracy in Nigeria, describing Oseni as a courageous defender of democratic ideals who remained steadfast in the fight for good governance.

He said both men stood shoulder to shoulder in defending the sanctity of the historic 1993 Nigerian presidential election won by the late Moshood Kashimawo Olawale Abiola and participated actively in the movement that ultimately brought an end to military rule in Nigeria.

“Kola Oseni was a warrior for democracy. He believed in the ideals of democracy and good governance and fought for them,” Tinubu declared.

The President also recalled that in 2022, when he declared his intention to contest the presidency, Oseni gave him his blessings and offered heartfelt prayers for the success of his aspiration, although his relocation to the United States limited his direct participation in the campaign.

Tinubu disclosed that as President, he is implementing some of the reforms and ideas they discussed over the years, driven by a shared commitment to building a stronger, more prosperous Nigeria.

Expressing gratitude for Oseni’s lifelong service, the President thanked him for his immense contributions to Lagos State, Nigeria, and the progressive political movement.

“Thank you for your service to Lagos State. Thank you for your service to Nigeria. Thank you for being a brother and a friend and for standing by me over the years,” he said.

In one of the most emotional parts of the tribute, Tinubu lamented the loss of a trusted confidant.

“Indeed, a brother and a bosom friend has fallen. An Iroko among us has fallen.”

While mourning his passing, the President expressed gratitude to Almighty Allah that Oseni lived a fulfilled life, reached an advanced age, and left behind worthy children to carry on his legacy.

He pledged never to forget the late elder statesman or the ideals he represented, while praying for divine comfort for his wife, children, and the entire family.

“As Kola Oseni’s remains are laid to rest, Remi and I wish him eternal rest. May Almighty Allah grant him the best part of Aljanna,” the President concluded
