The New York State Senate in the United States has given its nod to a new legislation that replaces the conventional terms “mother” and “father” with gender-neutral designations.
Theliberationnews gathered that under the bill, a “mother” will now be referred to as a “gestating parent,” while a “father” will be described as a “non-gestating parent.”
The legislation, which had already been passed by the State Assembly in March and was adopted by the Senate this week, is part of broader legal updates introducing gender-neutral terminology in family law.
It also replaces “paternity” proceedings used to determine a child’s biological father with “parentage” cases, reflecting the new language framework.
Other changes in the bill include replacing the term “putative father,” sometimes used in legal contexts for an alleged or unconfirmed father, with “alleged parent.”
The bill was sponsored by Senator Luis Sepulveda and Assemblywoman Amy Paulin and will now be forwarded to Governor Kathy Hochul for final approval.
However, the move has triggered criticism from conservative groups, who have described the legislation as excessive political correctness and an attack on traditional family values.
The Democratic-controlled State Conservative Party Chairman, Gerard Kassar, described the development as “woke culture run amok,” arguing that it reflects misplaced priorities by lawmakers.
He said the decision could portray the state negatively to outsiders, questioning the necessity of the changes.
Republican gubernatorial candidate Bruce Blakeman also condemned the bill, accusing Democrats of undermining traditional family structures and vowing to reverse the policy if elected governor.
