Workers’ Day: FG Announces Friday Public Holiday

The Federal Government has declared Friday, May 1, 2026, a public holiday to celebrate this year’s International Workers’ Day.

The announcement was made by the Minister of Interior, Olubunmi Tunji-Ojo, who in a statement issued to Nigerian news media extended warm congratulations to Nigerian workers for their resilience and contributions to national development.

In a statement issued on Thursday and signed by the Permanent Secretary, Magdalene Ajani, the minister praised workers across the country for their dedication, noting that their efforts remain the backbone of Nigeria’s growth and prosperity.

“The Federal Government has declared Friday, May 1, 2026, a public holiday to celebrate this year’s International Workers’ Day,” the statement read.

GWG.ng reports that Tunji-Ojo commended Nigerian workers for their commitment to duty, urging them to sustain the values of patriotism, productivity, and excellence in their various roles.

He reaffirmed the Federal Government’s commitment to improving workers’ welfare, strengthening security, and creating an enabling environment for economic growth.

While wishing workers a fulfilling celebration, the minister also called on Nigerians to remain peaceful and law-abiding, using the occasion to reflect on the importance of unity, diligence, and collective responsibility in nation-building.

International Workers’ Day, celebrated annually on May 1, honours the contributions of workers and the labour movement across the world, while also serving as a reminder of the need to continually advance workers’ rights and welfare.
