The National Association of Nigerian Students (NANS), Joint Campus Council (JCC), Lagos State Axis, on Wednesday, 22 July 2026, successfully hosted its Health, Safety and Security Summit 2026 at the Yusuf Grillo Hall, Yaba College of Technology (YABATECH), Yaba, Lagos, bringing together hundreds of students, student leaders, government officials, and stakeholders to advance conversations on creating safer and healthier learning environments across tertiary institutions in Lagos State.
The summit, themed “Safe Campus, Secure Future: Empowering Students Through Health, Safety and Security Awareness,” was initiated and organised by the leadership of Comrade Quadri Ishola Odewunmi, Chairman of NANS JCC Lagos State Axis, as part of the association’s commitment to promoting student welfare, preventive safety education, and stronger collaboration between students and relevant government institutions.
The event recorded an impressive turnout, with scores of students from tertiary institutions across Lagos State in attendance, alongside Students’ Union Government executives and other student leaders from various campuses.
Also present were the NANS South-West Zonal Coordinator, from Osun State College of Health Technology, and the NANS National Secretary-General, from the Federal College of Education, Osiele, Abeokuta, whose attendance further demonstrated the national support for the initiative.
The summit equally attracted representatives of critical Lagos State government agencies responsible for public safety, emergency management, education and youth development. These included officials from the Lagos State Fire and Rescue Service, Lagos State Safety Commission, Lagos State Domestic and Sexual Violence Agency (DSVA), Lagos State Security Trust Fund (LSSTF), Lagos State Ministry of Tertiary Education, Lagos State Ministry of Basic and Secondary Education, and the Lagos State Ministry of Special Duties and Inter-Governmental Relations.
Also in attendance were the Director-General of the Lagos State Youth Development Institute and the State Commander of Man O’ War, Lagos State Command, who joined other stakeholders in engaging participants on safety consciousness, emergency preparedness, responsible citizenship, youth leadership and campus security.
Throughout the summit, participants were exposed to practical sessions on personal safety, emergency response, fire prevention, accident prevention, campus security, gender-based violence prevention, mental wellbeing, and the importance of fostering a culture of vigilance and collective responsibility within tertiary institutions.
Speakers emphasised that ensuring safe campuses requires a collaborative effort involving students, educational institutions, government agencies, security organisations and the wider society. They encouraged students to become ambassadors of safety by embracing responsible conduct, promptly reporting security concerns and actively participating in initiatives aimed at improving campus security.
The interactive nature of the summit provided participants with opportunities to engage directly with experts and government officials, ask questions, share experiences and gain practical knowledge that can be applied within their respective institutions.
Speaking on the significance of the programme, the leadership of NANS JCC Lagos State reaffirmed its commitment to complementing government efforts through advocacy, awareness campaigns and strategic partnerships aimed at improving the wellbeing of students across Lagos State.
The association noted that the summit represents one of several interventions under its broader agenda to build safer campuses, empower student leaders and strengthen collaboration between students and government institutions.
The organisers expressed appreciation to the Lagos State Ministry of Tertiary Education for its support towards the successful hosting of the summit. Appreciation was also extended to UPDATE LAGOS Media House, Ile-Iyan by PODS, and several public-spirited individuals whose contributions contributed significantly to the success of the programme.
As the event concluded, participants commended NANS JCC Lagos State for convening a timely and impactful summit, describing it as a valuable platform that not only increased awareness of health, safety and security issues but also strengthened collaboration between students and key stakeholders responsible for protecting lives and property within educational institutions.
With the successful hosting of the 2026 edition, NANS JCC Lagos State reaffirmed its resolve to sustain initiatives that promote safer campuses, responsible student leadership and improved welfare for students across tertiary institutions in Lagos State.
