The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission has detained the Director-General of the Energy Commission of Nigeria, Mustapha Abdullahi, for alleged money laundering offences.

A source within the commission said Abdullahi was arrested in Abuja on Wednesday and was being held in EFCC custody.

The official said the investigation centred on financial transactions estimated at N500 billion.

The source, who spoke on condition of anonymity, said the commission was investigating fraud and money laundering allegations linked to the agency.

EFCC spokesperson Dele Oyewale could not be reached for comment at the time of filing this report.

It will be recalled that president Bola Tinubu appointed Abdullahi as Director-General of the Energy Commission of Nigeria on Oct. 24, 2023.
