A significant milestone has been achieved in the ongoing efforts to foster mutual respect and collaboration between youths in Lagos State and law enforcement officers, particularly the police, toward more effective and responsible security operations.
The Lagos State Commissioner of Police, CP Moshood Jimoh, has approved the proposal for the establishment of Youth Advisory Councils across all divisional police stations in the state.
The proposal was reiterated by the Chairman of the National Youth Council of Nigeria (NYCN), Lagos State Chapter, Engr. Adigun Ibrahim Olalekan, during the closing ceremony of Youth Dialogue 3.0, an initiative of the Lagos State Ministry of Youth and Social Development.
The programme, which commenced on November 4, featured a series of engagements held across the five divisions of Lagos aimed at promoting understanding and mutual respect between the police and the youth.
At the closing ceremony held at the Anchor Event Centre, Ikeja, a Senior Advocate of Nigeria (SAN), Dr. Muiz Banire, had earlier recommended the establishment of Youth Advisory Councils as part of his far-reaching suggestions during his presentation on the theme of the event: “The Power of partnership: cultivating trust and understanding between youth and law enforcement agencies.”
Lending his voice to the proposal, Engr. Adigun emphasized the importance of such an initiative in strengthening partnership between young people and police officers for more effective policing.
He further urged the police authorities to consider appointing Youth Ambassadors across local council areas and wards in the state to deepen engagement and trust between both parties.
Additionally, the youth leader advocated for the domestication of the Police–Youth Dialogue at the grassroots level to strengthen community policing and ensure inclusivity in security-related conversations.
In his remarks, CP Moshood Jimoh granted express approval for the creation of the Youth Advisory Councils, affirming that the Nigeria Police Force remains committed to constructive engagement with youths and to advancing collaborative, community-based security approaches across Lagos State.
Notable among others in attendance included Oba Omogbolahan Lawal; Oniru of Iru Land, heads of other law enforcement agencies among others as well as youths drawn from across the 57 LGAs and LCDAs in the state.
