The Executive Chairman of Agboyi-Ketu LCDA, Hon. (Mrs.) Adetola Adunni Abubakar, has reaffirmed her commitment to grassroots development, community harmony and youth empowerment through the successful hosting of the Chairman’s Unity Cup 2025, which concluded with a colourful grand finale on Tuesday, November 25, 2025.

The tournament which was part of activities marking her first 100 days in office, was designed to promote unity, sportsmanship and socioeconomic advancement by harnessing the energy and talents of young people across the LCDA.

The final match, held at the Oba Lamina Mini Stadium in Agboyi II (Agboyi Ori-Omi), was a spectacle of passion and community spirit. Residents thronged the venue in their numbers, turning the stadium into a carnival of music, football and celebration as local vendors also made brisk sales of soft drinks and snacks, especially of riverine delicacies such as fried fish, crayfish and roasted plantains, boosting small-scale economic activities around the event.

Hon. Adetola Abubakar, greatly adored and fondly called “Adunni Ade” by her people arrived the venue to loud cheers as she made her way through the riverine communities. Waving from her boat and later greeting spectators at the stadium as she she interacted freely with residents who hailed her progressive, people-centred style of leadership. Her electrifying presence further reinforced her growing image as a unifying figure and a champion of community development in Agboyi Ketu.

The exciting final match saw Ward G defeat Adunni Ace Strikers by 3–0, emerging champions of the 2025 edition. The competition, which featured eight formidable teams, showcased extraordinary grassroots football talents, young athletes many believe are capable of representing Lagos State and Nigeria on national and international stages.

Immediately after the final whistle, Hon. Adetola Abubakar presented the Trophy to the winners with a ₦1 million cash prize, while the runners-up received ₦750,000 and the third-place team got ₦500,000. In her remarks, the Chairman expressed profound joy and congratulated all participating teams. She noted that the initiative aligned with her Eight-Point Development Agenda, specifically under Youth and Social Development.

She also reaffirmed her belief in the potential of Agboyi-Ketu youths, promising sustained investments in sports, capacity-building programmes and talent development.

“Our youths are world-class talents. They deserve the support, platforms and opportunities to shine. This administration will continue to give them wings to fly,” she assured.

Community leaders and stakeholders also praised the initiative, Hon. Kalejaiye Mutiu Afolabi (Onikoro) of Agboyi, in an interview with journalists, described the Chairman as a visionary leader whose grassroots-driven programmes and initiatives such as the Unity Cup continue to elevate the LCDA’s profile and fast-track socioeconomic development.

The grand finale was graced by several dignitaries and traditional rulers, including Oba Lamina Adesegun, Oloruba of Agboyi II and Oba Balogun Oyero, Alaketu of Ketu while Olu of Agboyi Kingdom, Oba Monsuru Oladega was represented by Chief Abubakar Seriki, Odofin of Agboyi as their presence added colour, cultural significance and communal solidarity to the tournament, further underscoring the importance of traditional institutions in grassroots development.

Representatives of the State Government at the event, the SSA to the Governor on Sports, Hon. Damilare Orimoloye, SSA to the Governor on Local Government and Rural Development, Hon Babs Durojaiye and Lagos State APC Youth Leader, Dr. Muritala Seriki collectively commended Hon. Abubakar’s focus on youth empowerment and her strategic use of sports as a tool for community building and economic expansion.

The 2025 Chairman’s Unity Cup stands as a testament to Agboyi-Ketu LCDA’s rising culture of sports excellence, strengthened unity and renewed hope, anchored on leadership that prioritizes people, progress and prosperity.
