For the second year running, a quiet town in Ogun State, inhabiting an exceptional educational institution, has produced Nigeria’s most outstanding science secondary school.
The school: De Genius Olivet College, owned by Hon. Ipoola Ahmed Omisore, an advertising legend and avowed progressive, is located in Tigbo’lu, a vibrant and rapidly growing community in Tigbo town, Ota, Ogun state. This routine award winning college has, once again, been crowned the best secondary school in science in Nigeria.
The prestigious title was awarded at the 2025 National Science and Technology Competition organised by the Science Teachers Association of Nigeria (STAN).
The national finals, hosted this year in Abeokuta, the Ogun State capital, brought together the crème de la crème of Nigeria’s science-focused secondary schools with thirty-seven(37) elite institutions representing each of the 36 states and the Federal Capital Territory, Abuja.
Amid the fierce and intellectually stimulating competition, De-Genius Olivet College distinguished itself, not just with knowledge, but with innovation, environmental consciousness, and scientific creativity.
The college’s winning project was both groundbreaking and socially relevant: a locally-fabricated machine that converts human sewage and excreta into reusable water.
Designed and built by the students under the guidance of their science instructors, the device combines elements of environmental engineering, microbiology, and sustainable water treatment.
The innovation earned thunderous applause and high praise from both judges and spectators, who recognized its potential in addressing one of the country’s persistent public health challenges: waste management and water scarcity.
“This is not just a project, it’s a solution to a real-world problem. To see this level of ingenuity from secondary school students is nothing short of inspiring,”one judge commented.
The event, which drew dignitaries from across the country, was formally opened by the Deputy Governor of Ogun State, Mrs Naimot Salako who stood in for Governor Dapo Abiodun.
In his keynote address, the governor, highlighted the importance of nurturing young scientific minds, praising the initiative as a vital platform for discovering and supporting the next generation of Nigerian inventors, researchers, and problem-solvers.
“Our future lies in the hands of our youth and today, we are seeing a clear example of that future in action,” she said.
This is not a one-off victory for De-Genius Olivet College. It marked the second consecutive year the school has not only represented Ogun State at the national level but also claimed first place in the country.
Such consistency has cemented the school’s reputation as a beacon of academic and scientific excellence, not just in the southwest but across Nigeria.
Speaking after the announcement of the results, the school’s energetic and excellence driven proprietor, Hon. Ipoola Ahmed Omisore, expressed great delight and pride in the students’ recurring model academic performance and emphasized the school’s mission to combine academic rigor with real-world empirical applications.
“At De-Genius Olivet, we train our students to think beyond the classroom. Our goal is to produce scientists who are not only academically sound but socially responsible,”he said.
Also showering encomium on the school, Oba Victor Thomas Fagbayi, the Onitigbo of Tigbo’lu, praised the school’s dedication to excellence and innovation.
“You have made Tigbo Town and the entire Ogun State proud once again. “This victory is not just for the college, but for the entire community. It shows what It shows what can be achieved when talent meets opportunity and support,” the traditional ruler declared in a public statement.
The school has been routinely producing one of the best West African Examinations Council (WAEC) results, not only in Ogun State but across the country with some of its students winning individual awards for self, state and country. Nigerians should watch out for this bastion of academic excellence for more glory.
