The National Youth Council of Nigeria (NYCN), Lagos State Chapter, under the visionary leadership of Engr. Adigun Ibrahim Olamilekan, has once again demonstrated its commitment to amplifying the voices of Nigerian youths in shaping sustainable policies.
On behalf of the Council, the Directorate of Petroleum and Solid Minerals, ably led by Engr. Sheriff Babatunde Lamidi, alongside Comrade Oyewo Paul, presented a position paper before the Lagos State House of Assembly Committee on Energy and Mineral Resources on the proposed IBILE Energy Corporation Bill.
The bill, titled “A Law to Establish the IBILE Energy Corporation and for Connected Purposes,” seeks to set the foundation for Lagos’ long-term energy sustainability, resource management, and innovation.
In its submission, NYCN Lagos infused youth-driven and progressive recommendations into the bill to ensure that the legislation not only strengthens Lagos’ energy landscape but also:
– Promotes inclusivity by integrating youth participation in the decision-making and implementation framework.
– Encourages innovation and research, opening pathways for young engineers, scientists, and entrepreneurs in the energy sector.
– Supports skill development and empowerment programs to prepare the next generation for active involvement in petroleum, solid minerals, and renewable energy transitions.
– Advances sustainability and climate-friendly practices, positioning Lagos as a model for green energy development in Nigeria.
Speaking after the presentation, Engr. Sheriff Babatunde Lamidi, Director of the Petroleum and Solid Minerals Directorate, emphasized that the youth must not be sidelined in shaping laws that will determine the future of energy and mineral resources in Lagos State.
“This bill must reflect the dynamism, innovation, and energy of the youth. By embedding youth-centric provisions, we ensure a future where Lagos harnesses not only its resources but also the creativity and expertise of its young people,” he stated.
In her response, the Deputy Speaker of the Lagos State House of Assembly reassured that the continuous involvement of youths remains a focal point of the Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu–led administration. She urged the youths to remain focused, disciplined, and ready to position themselves for professional development and relevant advancement to take advantage of emerging opportunities.
The NYCN Lagos leadership reaffirmed its readiness to continue engaging stakeholders, policymakers, and industry leaders to make sure the bill, once passed, becomes a tool for empowerment, innovation, and sustainable development.
With this intervention, the NYCN Directorate of Petroleum and Solid Minerals has positioned itself as a critical stakeholder and partner in shaping Lagos’ energy future.
