I have recently read commentary from politicians in various parts of Nigeria, where political leaders were vouching for certain individuals to maintain their positions despite the challenges the country is facing.
While politicians claim things have improved in many areas, the reality for the masses is that much still needs to be done to alleviate their hardships. Businesses are struggling to survive, and citizens are resorting to old survival tactics, jokingly referred to as “one zero one,” “one zero zero,” or “zero one zero.”
Some say they are forming coalitions to create a new political party aimed at unseating the president and promising a better future. Others boldly state, “sebi owo ni o je,” implying that it’s all about money. They are known to distribute gifts like maize as elections approach to win people’s support. Regardless of the promises, Nigerians have not experienced any relief after two years under the current administration, and significant action is needed in the coming year.
Governance has been overlooked as political leaders begin to campaign for votes. This situation doesn’t align, to some extent, with the provisions of the Electoral Act.
Democracy is in action. The 2027 election will come and go, Nigeria will remain. All participants must play according to the rules of the game.
Democracy is the best form of government. Citizens have the right to communicate with those in power, and it is essential for those in power to listen and take action. Just as spectators are vital in all sports, I urge all participants to be civil and maintain decorum. We must recognise that everyone has different perspectives. Let’s strive to be courteous and respect one another as we express our views. Nigeria has the potential to be great.
May Almighty God guide Nigerians wisely in 2027, so our country can continue on its path to greatness. Let’s commit to being peaceful and law-abiding citizens. It’s time to prepare our Permanent Voter Cards (PVC) to vote in 2027. If you do not have a PVC, the Independent National Electoral Commission, INEC, will soon begin registration for those who are 18 years and older, those who may have lost their PVCs, and those who wish to transfer to a new location. Take advantage of this opportunity; go get your PVC to vote for candidates of your choice in 2027. Remember, your vote is your right. The constitution guarantees individuals the right to associate with whomever they choose.
Do what is right at the right time: vote for the candidates of your choice, avoid violence, and promote peace and love among others. Prepare to vote in 2027, and refrain from engaging in conflicts or arguments. As a citizen, be peaceful and observant as events unfold. Take the necessary steps; our country is on the path to greatness, and we will get there. Democracy is growing in Nigeria, and people’s access to governance is in their hands. Use it wisely.
My prayer for Nigerians at this time is to choose the path of peace, unity, and development.
Nigeria is a project that we all must rally behind; we should avoid descending into anarchy or war. No nation can accommodate twenty-five million citizens as refugees. We must protect ourselves from political and social turmoil. Although hunger and poverty may be prevalent today, a better future in Nigeria is assured by our natural resources and the many blessings we have. Let us pray for strong, courageous leaders who will serve the people.
Nigerians have the opportunity every four years to elect their leaders at the local, state, and national levels. Let us safeguard our democracy, as it is the best form of government. In 2027, Nigerians should go out peacefully to elect their leaders.
Citizens have choices among political parties, and I urge everyone to exercise their civic responsibility with peace and love. It’s important to monitor your vote and be gracious in victory. Nobody should feel forced to vote for any particular candidate; we must choose our leaders without resorting to violence. Nigeria will continue to grow stronger.
To the election umpire, the Independent National Electoral Commission, Nigerians are counting on you. We believe in your ability to create a level playing field for voters to choose their leaders. Please do everything possible to ensure free, fair, and credible elections. All equipment must function properly to maintain the integrity of the electoral process.
The leadership of INEC should recognise Nigerians are watching it closely. Please be fair and transparent in your actions. This is your nation—do everything possible to ensure that people’s votes count and to eliminate any loopholes that could lead to distrust among citizens. I hope that INEC will conduct free, fair, and credible elections in 2027. Nigeria can only become great when its citizens can freely elect their candidates in an election. INEC must take steps to prevent rigging and electoral malpractices.
God bless my country, God bless Nigeria.
