A sickle-cell warrior, David Owoeye, 48, has opened up on his ordeal with Sickle Cell disorder and how God has been using him to give hope to others.
Taking to his X (formerly Twitter) page @davoshalom on Wednesday to share his story, Owoeye recalled that God revealed to him that he won’t set him free from the lethal disorder instead use him to inform and inspire others to glorify Him.
The sickle cell advocate explained how he was able to beat the 18, 21 and 25 years life expectancy many had thought he won’t surpass and how he’s managing the many complications associated with the syndrome.
He wrote, “I am 48 years old.
As a sickle cell warrior. When I was young, I was told that I would not live beyond 18 years,
But I surpassed 18 years. Later, I was told that I would not live beyond 21 years, but I surpassed 21 years. Later, I was told that I would not live beyond 25 years,
But I surpassed 25 years. Now, I am 48 years old, I have lived beyond all those limitations,
Because it is God that has the final say over every life. Because what God cannot do does not exist. Thank You, Jesus Christ.”
Responding to a question by one of his followers, @ndilichi1261151 who had asked how he was able to fight the syndrome, Owoeye explained that though he’s stilll fighting the syndrome but he discovered how to deal with it after his conversation with God.
His word, “I have fought and still fight sickle cell anaemia by God’s grace. When I was a teenager seeking a solution through prayers, fasting and herbal means. God told me He will not heal me from sickle cell anaemia but use it to glorify His name in my life. Later in life, God told me to adhere to all my recommended hospital visits and medications. So, I have been complying with His instructions and using my medical knowledge and experiences of sickle cell disorder to inform and inspire others to the glory of God.”
He explained further that he has been on in monthly blood exchange transfusion after he was diagnosed of silent stroke in 2022.
Giving an insight into how he’s been dealing with other complications, the Infection prevention and control specialist added: “Though I am surviving with many complications of sickle cell disorder such as depression, chronic fatigue syndrome, chronic pain syndrome, silent stroke, early spondylodegenerative changes of the vertebrae, sensorineural hearing loss, just got healed of the 3rd chronic leg ulcer that lasted for 20 months, muscular spasms of the back muscles, and others, I use my medication regularly, I adhere to my hospital visits as recommended, I trust God, I use my experience & knowledge to inform and inspire many to the glory of God. This is how I have survived and overcome by the grace of God.”
His story has since elicited sympathy from a lot of his followers with many describing him as a ‘fighter, ‘an unsung hero’.
