Renowned public affairs commentator and Lagos grassroots leader, Olufemi Ibine, has commended the judiciary for its firm stance in denying bail to Yahaya Bello, the former Kogi State governor, who is facing allegations of embezzling N110 billion in public funds. This decision, delivered by the Federal High Court, ensures Bello remains in custody at Kuje Correctional Facility, pending further proceedings.
In a statement issued on Wednesday, Ibine hailed the court’s determination as a pivotal moment for Nigeria’s judiciary, emphasizing the importance of upholding the rule of law and delivering justice without fear or favor.
“This is a watershed moment in our collective fight against corruption,” Ibine declared. “By denying bail to an individual accused of mismanaging billions in public funds, the judiciary has sent a powerful message that no one is above the law. This decision strengthens public confidence in our legal system and demonstrates that the courts are willing to hold leaders accountable for their actions.”
He also called on activists, civil society organizations, and all stakeholders advocating for good governance to applaud and support the judiciary’s decision. He urged them to use this case as a rallying point for pushing reforms that promote transparency, accountability, and fairness in Nigeria’s justice system.
“For years, activists and concerned citizens have called for a judiciary that is firm, independent, and unwavering in its commitment to justice. This is our moment to unite and recognize that progress is being made. We must amplify this achievement and ensure that the momentum is sustained,” Ibine stated.
The allegations against Yahaya Bello include the diversion of funds meant for public infrastructure and development during his tenure as governor of Kogi State. The court, citing the severity of the charges and the potential risk of interference with the investigation, ruled against granting him bail.
He stated further: “This case is a litmus test for our judicial system,” Ibine added. “If successfully prosecuted, it will be a step forward in the fight against the entrenched culture of impunity that has plagued Nigeria for decades. It is incumbent upon all of us to support the judiciary in seeing this case through to its logical conclusion.
“As Yahaya Bello remains behind bars, the public’s attention remains firmly fixed on the proceedings. For many, this case is not just about one individual but about setting a precedent for how corruption cases are handled in Nigeria’s legal system.”
Ibine’s remarks have resonated with many Nigerians who view this decision as a rare but necessary example of judicial integrity. Activists have since echoed his call for vigilance, urging citizens to monitor the case closely and ensure that justice is not compromised.
