Following the arrest of the woman in a now-viral video, Funmi Faith, dehumanizing her daughter, Lagos State government has assured onward prosecution.

The 32-year-old mother was arrested by men of Nigerian police when a video of her unapologetically subjecting a female child believed to be hers to humiliation went viral on the internet.

The state Police Public Relations Officer, SP Benjamin Hundeyin, confirmed her arrest in a statement on Wednesday.

Prior to her prompt arrest, an X.com user had shared the video asking for help for a female child who was being maltreated.

A voice in the video condemned the treatment as “dehumanising” and appealed to the Lagos State Government for intervention. The voice said, “Mummy Mariam, this is bad. It is dehumanising. You can’t treat this girl like this.

“I am giving the Lagos State Government this video, this is dehumanising.”

According to Hundeyin, Faith was arrested by officers from the Oke-odo Division on Tuesday.

Corroborating Hundeyin’s statement the commissioner for Information, Gbenga Omotosho assured that the police force and the Sexual and Gender-Based violence agency of the state will press criminal charges against the woman upon conclusion of their investigation.

“The perpetrator has been arrested & the girl (Esther) placed temporarily till tomorrow (today) when a more permanent placement will be sorted out for her.

“Social investigation will continue & the Police force & SGBV will continue with the criminal charge on the perpetrator,” Omotosho said in reaction to Theliberationnews’ enquiry about the issue.
