Godwin Obaseki, governor of Edo State has set the template for minimum wage payment in the country on Monday when he announced the increment of minimum wage for workers in the State from N40,000 to N70,000.
The governor disclosed this during the unveiling of the newly built ultra-modern Labour House (secretariat complex) for labour unions in Benin City.
According to Obaseki, the new minimum wage regime will come into effect on this year’s Workers Day on May 1.
Edo state currently pays N40,000 minimum wage which is N10,000 more than the National Minimum Wage of N30,000.
This is the second time that the governor is increasing minimum wage in the state.
The first time was around 2021 when he raised the state’s minimum wage from N30,000 to N40,000.
