The Senator representing Lagos West, Dr. Idiat Oluranti Adebule has doled out food packs to over 10,000 households across the senatorial district.
Adebule, at the flag-off ceremony of the mega palliative distribution program held at Police College, Ikeja, on Saturday explained that the development was in continuation of her efforts aimed at mitigating the negative but temporary effect of the economic policies being undertaken by the federal government.
The chairman House Committee on Social Welfare and Poverty Alleviation added that the economic downturn being experienced is a global phenomenon as she appealed for more support for President Bola Tinubu in his aggressive and comprehensive effort to set the nation’s economy on the path of sustainable prosperity.
Speaking further, the former Lagos State Deputy Governor appreciated her constituents for the confidence reposed in her by way of her resounding victory in the 2023 general elections assuring that she will not rest on her oars until she delivers on her campaign promises.
Recalling some of her previous programs, Adebule listed the fertilizer support to farmers to ensure food security, and too-notch training for over 200 youth at the School of Oceanography for Marine Economy in Nigeria assuring that more welfare and human-capital development programs are in the offing.
Her words: “Meanwhile, as your senator, my primary duties are to propose laws that will help us achieve our goals, represent the interest of my constituents, and oversight the executive arm of government to ensure better service delivery. However, distinguished guests, ladies and gentlemen, during tough times like this in the life of our nation, it is also a matter of duty and responsibility for me to support my constituents through social intervention programmes such the one happening today.
“In the last nine months, I have implemented some support programmes for Lagos-West constituents, including regular distribution of food items and other largesse during national celebration periods. In particular, about a thousand bags of rice were distributed in December, 2023 to cushion the effect of fuel subsidy removal so that our people can also celebrate the yuletide. Support for young and old farmers in Lagos-West by the distribution of sizeable number of bags of fertiliser in November 2023 to help in the preparation for the planting season.
“In December 2023, I facilitated the training of 200 young people in fisheries at the Institute of Oceanography and Marine Research, Victoria Island and each participant was given starter capital of One Hundred Thousand Naira as my contribution towards integrating the young people of Lagos-West into the new drive for marine economy in Nigeria. Again today, we are starting the distribution of about ten thousand food packs containing various food items such as rice, semovita, vegetable oil, garri, pasta and tomato paste.”
On his part, the Lagos chairman of the ruling All Progressive Congress (APC) Pastor Cornelius Ojelabi who was among the dignitaries at the event commended the lawmaker for rising to the moment for her constituents in this challenging time even as he assured that the hardship is temporary.
He used the medium to call for more support for President Bola Tinubu in his efforts to tick all boxes in his RenwedHope agenda.
Also, the historical event had in attendance other chieftains of the party across Lagos West and the state at large as well as former Senator Ganiyu Olanrewaju Solomon, Hon. Musiliu Obanikoro, religious leaders, and traditional leaders among others.
