Amadou Ba, the presidential candidate of the ruling party in Senegal, has conceded defeat and congratulate the opposition leader, Bassirou Diomaye Faye ahead of his official declaration as a winner.
Ba congratulated Faye through telephone call ahead of Friday’s official declaration of a winner by the country’s Supreme Court.
Spokesperson for Amadou Ba, Abdou Karim Fofana in a statement said his principal had Congratulated and prayed for the new president in a telephone call.
“Looking at how the presidential election was conducted peacefully and as we await official declaration of results, I congratulate President Bassirou Diomaye Diakhar Faye over his victory in the first round of elections.”
The statement acknowledged that the ruling party’s candidate had accepted defeat from his main opponent from the “Pastef” party.
An estimated 7.3million Senegalese went to the polls on Sunday to elect the country’s 5th president after Leopold Sedar Senghor ruled from 1960 to 1980; Abdou Diouf from 1981 to 2000; Abdoulaye Wade from 2000 to 2012 and Macky Sall from 2012 to 2024.
