A magistrates’ court has sentenced a 20-year-old tailor, Abubakar Lawan, to two years imprisonment for breaking into the house of a cop police officer and stealing items worth N331,800.

The convict pleaded guilty to housebreaking and theft.

Magistrate Shawomi Bokkos summarily sentenced Mr Lawan to one year imprisonment without the option of a fine and to also pay a compensation of N300,000 to the complainant and, in default, a year in prison.

He said the judgement would serve as a deterrent to those who would want to indulge in such illegal acts.

Earlier, the prosecution counsel, Inspector Ibrahim Gokwat, told the court that the case was reported on January 15 at the “C” Division Police station by the complainant, Inspector Aliya Ibrahim.

Mr Gokwat said that the convict broke into the house and stole two flat-screen TVs, one motorcycle, carpet, two decoders, trousers, and a jacket, valued at N331,800.

He said the convict committed an offence punishable under the provisions of the Plateau Penal Code Law.
