With the least local government area in Lagos State earning a staggering N7.74bn as allocation from the federal government in 2023, Lagosians are wondering what the councils’ chairmen did with such colossal monthly allocations.

In the local government councils, except for very few councils in Lagos, the populace are not feeling the impact of grassroots governance. Yet, the chairmen are living large, building more personal estates that their incomes cannot justify, traveling from time to time, using scarce public funds, to major cities across the world, and driving luxurious vehicles amongst other unexplainable ostentatious lifestyles.

Seeing these insensitive lifestyles of their chairmen, Lagosians are determined and beginning to ask questions and have intensified their calls for accountability and commensurate development from these mostly wasteful and greedy council chairmen in the Centre of Excellence.

Reports has shown that the 774 Local Government Areas across the country shared a whooping sum of N2.567 trillion in the outgone year 2023.

In one of the reports published by Statisense, it was revealed that from the 30 Local Government Areas across the country with the most federal allocations, all 20 constitutionally recognized Lagos local government areas made the prosperous list.

The Federal Capital Territory (FCT), Abuja also has all its six LGAs listed among the top 30 LGAs with Rivers State boasting of two while Kano and Bauchi have one apiece.

Recall that last week, Theliberationnews reported that Nigerians called out their governors and council chairmen for not complementing the efforts of the federal government of President Bola Tinubu in creating effective palliatives for the citizenry.

With at least 55 percent increment in allocation in 2023 emanating from the purported stoppage of subsidy on Premium Motor Spirit (PMS) by the federal government, it was observed that only very few council areas within Lagos State have lived up to expectations in terms of beneficial utilization of the monthly allocation increment accruals from the central government.

The best that most of these council areas have done could be described as embarking on unsustainable cosmetics projects/programs that have had little or no significant impacts in complementing the commendable efforts of the federal government at this difficult point in time in the history of the country.

Feeling the pulse of Lagosians at various public and social gatherings, there have been intense demands for accountability and corresponding development from the council chairmen. Owing to this reality, Theliberationnews has taken it upon itself to carry out a survey on the activities of these council chairmen.
