A lasting solution may have been found to the political brouhaha in Rivers State after President Bola Tinubu’s intervention.
The last few days have seen intense political impasse in the south-southern state with the demolition of the assembly complex and threat of impeachment against the governor.
Theliberationnews authoritatively gathered that President Bola Tinubu called the main players to an emergency meeting in Abuja on Monday.
Upon hours of negotiations, a resolution was reached to call off the feud between Governor Sir Fubara and the state assembly.
Under the terms of the deal, all lawsuits related to the crisis will be withdrawn. The assembly will also halt impeachment proceedings against Fubara.
Furthermore, the leadership of the house under Rt. Hon. Martin Amaewhule will be recognized, alongside 27 PDP defectors. The pay and benefits of lawmakers frozen by the governor will be reinstated as well.
The lawmakers can choose where to convene assembly business without interference from the executive. Fubara will need to resubmit the budget to a formal sitting of the legislature.
Commissioners who resigned amidst the dispute will also have their names forwarded again for approval. And the recently dissolved local councils have been restored.
President Tinubu, speaking after overseeing the talks, said: “I am pleased all parties have agreed to this roadmap for peace and stability in Rivers State. The people must always come first.”
