The efforts and contribution of youths in Ilupeju community, Lagos State in promoting cleanliness in their environment has been commended by the state commissioner for Environment and Water Resources, Tokunbo Wahab.
The youths under the aegis of Ilupeju Youth Forum (IYF) had on Saturday carried out a clean-up exercise in the community as they went around various landmarks as well as the nooks and crannies of the city to pick up trash for proper disposal.
The convener and coordinator of IYF Comrade Olayinka Dolapo Faruq popularly known as ODF explained that the exercise was one of the numerous ways the youths are showing responsibility noting that that was the third of its kind.
His words, “This is our community, it’s on us to keep it clean. Enough has been said about indiscriminate waste disposal which is a global threat to environmental cleanliness. It occurred that the best way to encourage people to take desired action is to lead by example and one of that is what we’ve done today.”
Speaking further, he said: “This clean-up exercise is the third edition of its kind and it’s just a complementary effort to what we’ve been doing to ensure cleanliness in our environment well-being of Ilupeju. One of our other resolves is to never drop dirt indiscriminately. Hardly will you see our youths disposing of items like bottled water plastics, nylon not even a speck of dirt indiscriminately because we are fully aware that they end up blocking drainages and water channels consequently causing floods, and breakouts of disease, among others. We will sustain this advocacy and ensure that other residents key into this act. My sincere appreciation to our volunteers and also the coordinator of NYCN, Odi-Olowo Local branch, Comrade Adigun Ibrahim for supporting the projects.”
Reacting to a post about the project on IYF’s Instagram page, custodian of the state’s environmental well-being Tokunbo Wahab, who has been taking bold steps to tackle environmental issues in the state thumbed the youths up for their efforts.
In his terse comment, he wrote “Well done, guys.”
Recall that, since taking over as the commissioner for environment and water resources, Wahab, has proven to be a developmental juggernaut in his sincere effort to restore absolute sanity and cleanliness to Lagos and ultimately achieve the ministry’s #GreenerLagos agenda.
