After spending 100 days in the custody of the Department of State Service without any trial whatsoever, the immediate past chairman of the Economic and Financial Crime Commission (EFCC), AbdulRasheed Bawa was received by his family, friends and well-wishers with an outburst of fond and mutual emotions, on Wednesday.

Recall that Bawa was arrested and immediately detained within weeks of the inauguration of President Bola Tinubu ostensibly on the allegation of corruption.

Although, there were reports of corrupt allegations against him but the details were never substantiated or made public.

While in detention, he was alleged to have resigned from his position as the anti-graft boss.

Willie Bassey, Director of Information at the office of the Secretary to the Government of the Federation, had said Bawa was suspended as a result of weighty allegations of abuse of office levelled against him.

Among those who leveled allegations of corruption against him was the former governor of Zamfara State and Minister of State for Defence, Bello Matawalle, who accused Bawa of demanding $2 million bribe from him, an allegation which he denied.

The allegation followed claims by the EFCC that Matawalle was being investigated over multiple allegations of corruption.

Peter Afunanya, DSS spokesman, said Bawa was released on Wednesday.

“DSS confirms release of former EFCC chairman, Abdulrasheed Bawa, a few hours ago (today 25th October, 2023)”
