Tokunbo Wahab, the sociable lawyer and incumbent Lagos State Commissioner for Environment and Water Resources has denied ever requesting that traders at Ladipo market must pay N40 million before the place is re-opened.

Wahab made this clarification on his X handle while reacting to a purported social media post alleging that he requested monetary gratification from the traders.

Wahab succinctly puts it on his X handle: “Except you are owing LAWMA for services rendered, you are not required to pay any official any money(bribe) to get your facility/market re-opened. Please do not fall victim to a scammer.”

Recently, the government clamped down on some markets in the state including Ladipo market. Those markets were sealed by the Lagos State government, according to the ministry, for various environmental infractions including improper disposal of wastes, non-payment of waste bills and filthy, unhygienic surroundings,

However, while some officially closed markets, including those in Oyingbo, Alamutu Ologede and Ile Epo were reopened on Monday by the Lagos state government, Ladipo Market was not which must have fueled the purported accusation against Wahab.

Wahab has however assured that the reopened markets complied fully with prescribed conditions set by the ministry.
