In a bid to promote environmental sustainability, the Coordinator of National Youth Council of Nigeria (NYCN), Odi-Olowo/Ojiwoye Local branch, Engr. Ibrahim Adigun has charged youths against indiscriminate waste disposal and other acts of environmental pollution.

He gave the charge during the clean-up program organised by the leadership of NYCN Badagry West local branch on Wednesday to kick off the array of events lined up to commemorate this year’s international youth day program and its youths’ week celebration.

The clean-up exercise, carried out on Suntan Beach, Badagry saw members of the youth body and other youths in the community carrying out thorough environmental sanitation on the beachside.

As one of the special guests invited for the kickoff exercise, Adigun congratulated his counterpart, Comrade Walter Aladeotan for the event adding that kicking off the 4-day commemorative event with a project like clean-up exercise was highly commendable.

“Indiscriminate waste disposal has remained a topical issue in our society because of the threats it poses. It remains an issue because of the lackadaisical attitude people show to the environment. At times I wonder when people will learn from the awful consequences of this act because it leads to drainage blockage, and water pollution, among others.

“Today, we’ve come here to carry out a clean-up exercise as part of the activities to commemorate this year’s International Youth Day celebration in Badagry West. This is a noble cause and it shows youths are indeed change agents and we are waking up to our responsibility of owning the environment. My humble charge today is for us, as youths, to intensify our efforts, especially in regard to advocacy against indiscriminate waste disposals and take ownership of our environment like NYCN Badagry is doing. In my local branch, we do this often because it’s one of the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) we are working on. If all hands remain on deck, we will have a better, safer and more conducive environment for all,” Adigun said.

He concluded by congratulating his counterpart, Comrade Aladeotan for the success of the event.
