Goalkeeper Edouard Mendy has completed his transfer from Chelsea to Saudi Pro League team Al Ahli on Wednesday.
The 31-year-old becomes the latest Premier League star to move to Saudi Arabia and will link up with the Jeddah-based side ahead of the 2023-24 season.
The Senegal goalkeeper enjoyed a fine start to his Chelsea career after joining the club from Stade Rennais in 2020, winning the Champions League and the UEFA Men’s Best Goalkeeper Award in 2021.
However, Mendy struggled for form last season and underwent surgery in January after fracturing his finger, eventually losing his status as the club’s No. 1 goalkeeper to teammate Kepa Arrizabalaga.
Confirming his departure from Chelsea, Mendy via his Facebook page, posted, “As I prepare to begin a new chapter in my career, it’s hard to say goodbye. It has been an incredible three years wearing the Chelsea jersey, during which we achieved great success, including winning the Champions League, the UEFA SuperCup, and the FIFA Club World Cup.
“I want to sincerely thank Roman, Marina, Petr, Christophe, and the entire staff who made it possible for me to represent this prestigious club. I am thankful to my coaches and all the staffs for the invaluable lessons and growth I experienced.
“A special thanks goes to all my teammates for the unforgettable journey we shared together.
“I also want to extend my deep gratitude to all the fans for their unbelievable support throughout my time at Chelsea.
“Although it’s time for me to turn a new page. I sincerely wish the club continued success with the new owners and numerous titles in the years to come. Edou.”
Mendy joins the likes of other football’s biggest names such as Karim Benzema, his former Chelsea teammates N’Golo Kante and Kalidou Koulibaly among others in the Saudi Pro League.
