Senator Godswill Obot Akpabio from Akwa-Ibom North-West has been declared president of the 10th Senate of the national assembly.

Akpabio, a former Minister of Niger Delta Affairs and ex-governor of Akwa Ibom State fended off competition from a fellow chieftain of the ruling All Progressive Party (APC), Abdulaziz Yari.

As announced by the clerk of the assembly, Akpabio polled 63 votes out of the possible 109 while Yari scored 46 votes

He was subsequently administered the Oath of Allegiance and oath of membership of the National Assembly as well as the Senate President by the clerk of the assembly.
