Finally distancing itself from weekend’s macabre dance in Adamawa state by its Resident Electoral Commissioner (REC), the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has embraced reason by declaring the incumbent governor and candidate of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), Ahmadu Umaru Fintiri winner of the Adamawa State governorship election.
The final results declared by INEC showed that Gov Fintiri garnered 430,869 votes to defeat his closest challenger and candidate of the All Progressives Congress (APC), Aisha Ahmed Binani, who scored 398,788 votes.
The Returning Officer for the election, Prof. Mohammed Mele, is expected to formally declare the incumbent Governor Fintiri, who was first elected governor in 2019, as winner of the election after the ongoing formalities.
Recall INEC had on Sunday suspended collation for the supplementary governorship election in Adamawa after the embattled Resident Electoral Commissioner, Hudu Yunusa Ari announced APC’s Aisha as the winner the Saturday supplementary election.
Ari’s declaration was contrary to the provisions of the Electoral Act.
The Electoral Act 2022 in Section 25 empowers only the returning officer to announce the result and declare the winner of an election at the state collation centre in the case of election of a governor of a state.
