The Permanent Secretary of Lagos State Emergency Management Agency (LASEM) Olufemi Oke-Osanyintolu has explained what led to the fatal accident that occurred at PWD, Ikeja area of Lagos, where two civil servants lost their lives.
Theliberationnews reported that the accident involving a Lagos State Government staff bus with registration no 04A- 48LA and a moving train happened in the early hours of Thursday leaving at least two people dead and several others injured.
The accident was confirmed by the Director, Public Affairs and Enlightenment Department of the Lagos State Traffic Management Authority, Adebayo Taofiq, in a statement.
The statement read in part: “The accident recorded many casualties as the staff bus is fully loaded with govt staff going to the office this morning.”
In a situation report issued by LASEMA, the Permanent Secretary, Dr Olufemi Oke-Osanyintolu, detailed that the “BRT bus driver while trying to beat the train traffic signal before the moving train rammed into the BRT bus.”
He blamed the recklessness of the bus driver for the avoidable accident as he confirmed that two female adults died on the spot with other victims are currently receiving treatment.
“On arrival of the agency’s response team at the scene of incident, it was discovered that a Viale BRT bus with an unknown registration number and a train was involved in an accident at the above-mentioned address.
“Investigation gathered revealed that the immediate cause of the incident was due to reckless driving on the part of the BRT bus driver while trying to beat the train traffic signal before the moving train rammed into the BRT bus.
“Unfortunately, two adults were confirmed dead and several people were seriously injured.
“The injured victims have been administered first aid treatment by the agency’s medical team (paramedics) and LASAMBUS officials, well stabilized and being transported to trauma center at LASUTH Ikeja for further treatment.
“The agency’s LRT at Cappa alongside LRT at C3, LRU paramedics at C3, Onipanu, Cappa, LASAMBUS officials, Nigeria Police Force, LASTMA, LNSC and Nigerian Army are responders present at the scene of incident. Operation ongoing,” the statement read.
