The leadership of the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) has been advised to get closer to the youths, especially at the grassroots if the voting pattern and narrative are to get any better.
This advice was given during a stakeholder’s engagement organized on Saturday at Ogba Gos, Mushin.
The meeting was called at the behest of the leaders of the party’s Independent Campaign Council for the presidential and gubernatorial elections headed by a member of Governor’s Advisory Committee (GAC) Cardinal James Odunmbaku and the Chief of Staff to the state governor, Mr. Tayo Ayinde.
It had in attendance the host, Special Adviser to the State Governor on Chieftaincy Matters, Hon. Bayo Oshinyemi, former Deputy Speaker of the state House of Assembly and Hon. Funmilayo Tejuosho among other political leaders.
Addressing the crowd, Cardinal Odunmbaku explained that the meeting had become important to look into what led to the low turnout of voters during the presidential and national assembly elections as well as how to better the narrative in the gubernatorial and state House of Assembly elections.
Among others who spoke was the Southwest Youth Coordinator, Mandate Work for BAT, Moshood Adegbola Afina
Afina harped on the need to evaluate the relevance and contribution of government appointees in their respective areas as he claimed that most of them who are expected to be the bridge between government and the people are always far off.
The youth leaders lamented that the appointees distanced themselves from the people and rarely engage the residents and stakeholders they are directly answerable to.
He noted that it has become important for the leaders to work closely with party youths and others in their respective community in order to give them the needed sense of belonging especially ahead of the elections ahead.
