The Commissioner for Women Affairs in Cross River, Mrs Gertrude Njar, has been kidnapped by unknown gunmen on Wednesday in Calabar.
An eye witness, Mr Samuel Okon, told the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) that she was forcefully taken out of her official car by masked young men.
According to Okon, they took the commissioner away in their car and abandoned her own car in Calabar South.
Mr Kalita Aruku, Special Adviser to Gov. Ben Ayade on Information, confirmed her kidnap in a telephone interview with NAN.
“Yes, security sources have informed us that the Commissioner for Women Affairs has been kidnapped.
“As we speak, security operatives have launched a manhunt for the kidnappers with a view to arrest them and rescue the victim unharmed,” he said.(NAN)
Theliberationnews gathered that prior to her appointment as commissioner, Mrs Njar served as Special Adviser to the governor of Cross River State in the Ministry of Women Affairs.
She had last November advised parents in the state to accord equal rights and privileges to their wards, irrespective of gender.
Dr Gertrude Njar gave the advice while speaking at an event to mark the International Day of the
Girl-Child on Tuesday in Calabar.
