For someone who became an introvert at the age of eight, not many would have expected Toke Makinwa to pursue a career on the big screen and become one of Nigeria’s most prominent hosts in the last decade.
From the young girl who started keeping to herself after losing her parents to a gas explosion at their home in Abuja in 1992, Makinwa has built a reputation as one of Nigeria’s leading media personalities with a strong but sometimes controversial stance on social issues and lifestyle topics.
Born November 3, 1984, in Lagos State, Makinwa earned a BA in English and Literature at the University of Lagos, which later became instrumental to her career choice as a TV host and media personality.
As learnt, Makinwa started her broadcasting journey on the radio in 2010 as a co-host on The Morning Drive Show on Rhythm 93.7 FM. The show launched her into breaking new grounds in broadcasting as a TV host and anchor of the Most Beautiful Girl in Nigeria (MBGN) beauty pageant. She also co-hosted Flytime TV’s 3 Live Chicks with the late Tosyn Bucknor and Oreka Godis, and The Voice Nigeria Season 3 with Nancy Isime before launching her Youtube channel, Toke Moments, in 2012, where she hosts several guests and discusses topical issues that affect young people. In 2015, she co-hosted the Moments talk show on EbonyLife Television with Michelle Dede and Bolanle Olukanni.
Her work rate is admirable, and you have to admire the passion she puts into her work. The ‘Radio Girl’ has spent over a decade building herself, and it is not surprising that she continues to break new grounds. She has also ventured into the acting space. Since making her acting debut in 2019, Toke Makinwa has featured in other movies like the critically acclaimed Blood Sisters and Glamour Girls, two of the Nigeria’s leading thriller movies of 2022.
Aside from being a media personality and author, she is also an entrepreneur. In 2017, she launched a Toke Makinwa Luxury handbag line and a skincare line in 2018 called Glow by TM.
She is also the first female host of the Gulder Ultimate Search and is presently the host of The Buzz, an exclusive Showmax show on Africa’s biggest reality TV show BBNaija. vlogger, author and actor. She sets trends and is one of the leading fashionistas in Africa.
All this must have contributed to her winning the NET Honours 2022 award for Most Popular Female Media Personality for the third year in a row.
She was also nominated for the Most Searched Media Personality (Female), a category that she won in 2021.
