The name Ado ( gourd ) was given to Eweka son of Prince Oranmiyan when he was given birth to by an Igodomigodo woman, Egor by name.
‘Ado’ ( Eweka) was born with a gourd hanging on his neck, hence the name ‘Ado’ and that was his real name. But Igodomigodo people ( later Ibinu, Ibini) due to language differences called it “Edo”.
‘Owomika’ but corrupted to Eweka by the people of ‘Ile-Ibinu’ was his appellation of which it overshadowed his real name ‘Ado’ ( gourd ) .
‘Ile-Ibinu’ ( land of vexation) was later mispronounced by the Igodomigodo people as ‘Ibini’ and finally corrupted to Benin by the Portuguese explorers, hence we have ‘Ado’ ( gourd ) Edo as the name of the state while we have ‘Ile-Ibinu’ ( land of vexation) Benin as the capital.
This solely occurred due to invasion and finally subdued of Igodomigodo people by Prince Oranmiyan and his brother Prince Afelogiyan from Ile-Ife in 1170AD when both and their armies conquered what we now known as Benin.
No matter the lies, Yoruba colonised Igodomigodo renamed it “Ile-Ibinu” (land of vexation) through Prince Oranmiyan and his brother Prince Afelogiyan all the way from Ile-Ife .
Prince Afelogiyan and some other Yorubas ( popular among was Oyebo a hunter) that accompanied the warrior Prince Oranmiyan from Ile-Ife to conquered Igogomigodo later settled in a town called “Ife kekere” ( Usen) not too far from “Ile-Ibinu” ( some even called the town “Ufe Oodaye”) and their descendants were the ones ruling the town till date while descendants of Prince Oranmiyan through ‘Ado’ (gourd) a.k.a Eweka were the ones ruling Benin till date as Oba of Benin.
