Lagos State Police Command of the Nigeria Police Force has denied reports making rounds that a new commissioner has been deployed to the state.
This was contained in a press statement issued by the command’s Public Relations officer, Benjamin Hundeyin late on Friday.
The speculation was that the one-time police spokesman, Mr Frank Mba had been deployed to Lagos State as the commissioner of police.
The statement by the state commands has since quelled the negative reactions that greeted the rumour with many suggesting that it was yet another ploy against the foremost presidential candidate and national leader of the All Progressives Congress (APC) Asiwaju Bola Ahmed Tinubu since no Igbo had been deployed to Lagos State in recent history, especially since the turn of the Fourth Republic.
Hundeyin, in the statement, said, “We wish to state categorically that the Commissioner of Police in Lagos State is still CP Abiodun Alabi, fdc, mnim, psc. For the avoidance of doubt, no Commissioner of Police has been posted to Lagos State.
“Members of the public are therefore urged to disregard fake news making the rounds that a new Commissioner of Police has been deployed to Lagos State Police Command.
“It is hoped that this clarification would halt the barrage of calls to officers of the Command which has resulted in needless distraction and waste of valuable time.
“The Lagos State Police Command will keep residents and the good people of Lagos State updated whenever the need arises.”
The expectation that Frank Mba as commissioner of Police in Lagos would have been interpreted by some in the APC as a hostile act from the police hierarchy.
