…warns ‘anyone sharing video risks 14 years jail’
Lagos State Government on Monday ordered the immediate and indefinite shutting down of Chrisland Schools following allegations of rape.
A 10-year-old female pupil of the school was allegedly raped by some of her male schoolmates during a trip to Dubai.
Already, the viral video of the incident has sparked outrage on social media, as many Nigerians have been demanding immediate response from public authorities.
But the Lagos State Ministry of Education announced in a statement on Monday that it had launched an investigation into the scandal.
The Lagos State Government further disclosed that the allegations of sex scandal involving some Chrisland School students were being probed by the appropriate Ministries, Departments and Agencies (MDAs), including the Ministry of Education; Office of Education Quality Assurance; Ministry of Youth and Social Development; Ministry of Justice, as well as the Lagos State Domestic and Sexual Violence Agency.
The MDAs in their joint statement disclosed that they had brought the criminal allegations to the attention of the Lagos State Commissioner of Police.
According to the MDAs, “In view of the allegations, we are committed to ensuring that adequate medical and pscyho-social support is provided.
“This is to reassure members of the public of the State Government’s commitment to safety and child protection, especially in ensuring that all child-centered institutions within the state, formulate and implement policies and systems that are compliant with the Executive Order (No.EO/AA08 of 2016), Lagos State Safeguarding and Child Protection Programme.”
The government, however, warned against members of the general public in the state to avoid sharing the alleged viral sex video of the Chrisland students, stressing that anyone involved visual in depiction of sexually explicit conduct involving of a child commits an offence and is liable to custodial sentence of 14years.
“This includes producing, distributing, receiving, or possessing an image of child pornography,” it warned.
