A woman identified as Aishatu Umar, has passed away after scissors were left in her body after a surgical procedure.
According to SaharaReporters, Aishatu Umar passed away on Monday at about 1:00 a.m. after enduring months of intense abdominal pain, which allegedly began after a surgery carried out in September 2025 at the Abubakar Imam Urology Center.
The incident was brought to public attention by a commentator, Abubakar Mohammed, who shared details of the case in a Facebook post, identifying the deceased as his sister-in-law. He said Aishatu is survived by her husband and five children.
“She was living in Kano when she fell ill a few months ago and underwent surgery at the Abubakar Imam Urology Center in September,” Mohammed said.
According to the family, complications started shortly after the operation. Aishatu reportedly complained repeatedly of severe abdominal pain, forcing her to return to the hospital several times for medical attention.
Relatives alleged that instead of carrying out detailed examinations, hospital staff continued to administer pain medication and discharged her, even as her condition deteriorated over time.
“She suffered this pain for four months,” Mohammed said.
It was only two days before her death that more comprehensive medical tests were reportedly conducted. The outcome of those tests, according to the family, revealed a disturbing discovery.
“Just two days ago, tests and scans were finally conducted, revealing that a pair of scissors had been left inside her body during the September operation,” Mohammed disclosed.
Following the discovery, arrangements were said to be underway for another surgery to remove the object. However, the family said the intervention came too late to save her life.
“Efforts were being made to perform a corrective surgery yesterday, but her time had run out, and she passed away.”
The family has described the incident as a clear case of serious professional negligence, questioning how a surgical instrument could be forgotten inside a patient during an operation.
“Is this not pure negligence?” Mohammed asked. “Truly, every soul has its appointed time, but how can professional doctors forget scissors inside a patient?”
He added that beyond the loss of a life, the incident raises serious concerns about the standard of healthcare delivery in the state.
The family has now appealed to the Kano State Government and relevant health regulatory bodies to launch a full investigation into the matter and ensure accountability.
“We call on the Kano State Government to investigate and take action,” the family said. “We call on the health regulatory bodies to investigate and take action. We demand justice for Aishatu Umar.”
As of the time of filing this report, the management of the Abubakar Imam Urology Center and Kano State health authorities had yet to issue an official response to the allegations.
