The death has occurred of Madam Lucia Onabanjo, wife of the first civilian governor of Ogun State, Olabisi Onabanjo.

The former first lady passed away at the age of 100.

The news of her death was made public on Tuesday by her daughter, Olubukunola Onabanjo, through a family statement.

According to the statement, Madam Onabanjo died peacefully on Monday, surrounded by loved ones.

She was described as the pillar and matriarch of the Onabanjo family.

The statement read in part, “The family of Chief Victor Olabisi Onabanjo, former Governor of Ogun State, announces with deep sorrow, yet with gratitude to Almighty God, the passing of our beloved mother, grandmother, and great-grandmother.

“Chief (Mrs.) Lucia Onabowale Onabanjo (1925–2026) was called to glory on Monday, January 11.

“We thank God for her long and fulfilled life, and for the enduring legacy of love, strength, and faith she leaves behind. May her soul rest in perfect peace.”

Madam Onabanjo was married to Olabisi Onabanjo, who served as Ogun State’s first civilian governor between 1979 and 1983.

Her late husband was also a respected journalist, widely known for his long-running weekly column, Ayekooto, before his death in 1990.

Family members said she lived a full and impactful life, leaving behind generations shaped by her values, discipline and strong faith.
