The National Secretary of the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC), Senator Ajibola Bashiru has slammed the Minister of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), Nyesom Wike, over the latter’s comments on the party’s internal affairs.
Basiru, called on Wike to resign as Minister and face his alleged obsession with Rivers politics.
The controversy ensued when Senator Basiru stated that all members of the APC’s National Working Committee (NWC) must accord sitting governors their due respect, as they remain the leaders of the party in their states.
Wike, a former governor of Rivers State, responded with a scathing attack on Basiru, prompting the APC’s rebuke.
In a statement, Senator Basiru questioned Wike’s locus to comment on APC’s affairs, pointing out that Wike was not a member of the party.
He also challenged Wike to prove his allegations of a N600 billion largesse in Rivers State, describing them as “cheap blackmail.”
The APC’s National Secretary accused Wike of destabilising the party in Rivers State and bringing the spirit of the opposition Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) into the APC.
He advised Wike to resign his ministerial appointment, citing the need for him to focus on his alleged obsession with Rivers politics.
The development raises questions about Wike’s loyalty to the APC and his role in the government.
As a minister, Wike is expected to support the government’s policies and programmes, but his actions suggest a deeper interest in Rivers politics.
The APC’s call for his resignation may be a test of his commitment to the party and the government.
