The Department of State Services (DSS) on Monday night released the detained president of the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC), Comrade Joe Ajaero.
According to insiders, Ajaero was released on bail at about 11:10 pm. after he was said to have written a statement.
It was observed that his release followed a threat by the NLC to mobilise its affiliate’s unions for a nationwide showdown if Ajaero was not released by 12 am on Tuesday
Theliberationnews reported that the union leader was arrested at the Nnamdi Azikiwe International Airport in Abuja on Monday on his way to the United Kingdom for a global Trade Union Congress meeting.
NLC had placed its affiliates’ bodies on alert.
The NLC had said in a statement by Benson Upah, its spokesperson that: “The congress will not stand idly by while the rights of its leaders and members are trampled upon.
” Accordingly, we demand for the immediate and unconditional release of Comrade Ajaero.”
