The newly-elected parliamentarians of Lagos State University (LASU), Ojo, Lagos, have been charged with the need to uphold parliamentary ethos and integrity in the discharge of their legislative duties.

The charge was given by the coordinator of National Youth Council of Nigeria (NYCN), Odi-Olowo/Ojuwoye Local Branch, Engr. Ibrahim Adigun at the parliamentary inaugural lecture organised by the 34th Students’ Parliamentary Council of the varsity, recently.

In his address, Adigun who was a one-time speaker of the varsity’s legislative arm congratulated the student parliamentarians on their victories at the elections adding that the onus is now on them to lead thousands of their peers meritoriously. He stressed that they must do that by strictly adhering to the guiding principles of the legislature, especially integrity.

“Congratulations on your election to the esteemed positions of parliamentarians. It’s my utmost delight to deliver a speech at this historical occasion and it is imperative to remind you that the core values that underpin democratic governance are ethics and integrity.

“Parliamentary ethics encompass honesty, transparency, and accountability in all actions and decisions. Upholding these principles not only ensures the trust of your peers but also fosters a culture of respect and cooperation within the parliamentary council and ensures a harmonious and admirable relationship between the students and school management,” Adigun said.

He added that “Integrity, on the other hand, demands adherence to moral and ethical principles.” He impressed it on them that as representatives of their respective faculties, maintaining integrity in acts and deeds, on and off campus, is paramount noting that it is the bedrock upon which public trust is built.

The speaker emeritus reiterated that as much as their role as parliamentarians is about passing resolutions or enacting policies that will further promote the leadership institution and the university as a whole, it is about serving with honor and dignity, embodying the ideals of democracy.

“Let these values of ethical conduct and integrity guide your actions and decisions throughout your time in office and you’ll see your name etched in gold. I wish you a successful term ahead,” he concluded.
