Wale Edun, Nigeria’s Minister of Finance and Coordinating Minister of the Economy has been appointed to chair the African Governors’ Forum of the World Bank.

This marks the first time in 60 years that Nigeria will hold the chairmanship of the forum, which represents African member countries of the World Bank.

According to Nigeria’s Federal Ministry of Finance on Saturday, Mr. Edun’s appointment “presents a unique opportunity for Nigeria and the implementation of President Tinubu’s Renewed Hope Agenda.”

Mr. Edun formally resumed office as Finance Minister in mid-August after being appointed by President Bola Tinubu and confirmed by the Senate.

The African Governors Forum, also known as the African Caucus, was established in 1963 as the “African Group” to strengthen the voice of African governors in the World Bank Group and International Monetary Fund on development issues relevant to the continent. All 54 African member countries of the institutions are represented by their finance ministers and central bank governors.

The forum meets twice yearly to convey the views and concerns of African governors to World Bank leadership through a memorandum. As chair, Mr. Edun will now lead these meetings and engagement with the World Bank on behalf of Africa.
