Lai Oso: A Reservoir of Knowledge Is Gone – Students Mourn Renowned Communication Professor Who Died In Auto Crash

The death of renowned Mass Communication scholar, Professor Lai Oso has thrown the media world into mourning mood.

As gathered by Theliberationnews, Oso, a renowned professor of communication, lost his life in a lone car accident on Saturday in Ijebu axis along Ore-Sagamu expressway.

His death has since been confirmed by the Dean, Faculty of Communication and Media Studies FCMS, Lagos State University, Professor Sunday Alawode.

Alawode, in a statement obtained by Theliberationnews, wrote, “It’s a rude shock to all of us even as we commiserate with Mummy Oso, the children and his entire family, the Communication family worldwide, LASU Community and all others.”

He died at the age of 67 years, three years away from retirement.

The late Dr. Lai Oso was a Professor of Mass Communication at the School of Communication, Lagos State University. He was the Dean of the school between 2011 and 2015. He is the current President, Association of Communication Scholars & Professionals of Nigeria (ACSPN). He was also a famous lecturer and don at the Mass Communication department of Ogun State Polytechnic (now Moshood Abiola Polytechnic) Abeokuta. He trained and nurtured many media practitioners who are doing well today.

He educated at the University of Lagos (B.Sc. Mass Communication), Obafemi Awolowo University, Ile-Ife (M.Sc. International Relations) and He obtained a Ph.D. degree in Mass Communication as a Federal Government scholar at the University of Leicester, England in 1977. He has worked as a Reporter, both in Radio and the News Agency of Nigeria. He has taught courses at both undergraduate and postgraduate levels. He has taught courses in Journalism, Media and Governance, Political Communication, Development Communication and theory.

Many students of the late sage have since taken to social media to express their condolences and their glowing tributes.

Reflecting on how the late sage brought his brilliance and experience to bear on the department of Mass Communication, Moshood Abiola Polytechnic (MAPOLY) during his stint with the school, the team lead of Theliberationnews, Damilola Kushimo Wrote, “I don’t think I can come to terms with the death of Prof. Lai Oso. His death is a huge loss to the Department of Mass Communication and Moshood Abiola Polytechnic as a whole. Mass Comm. MAPOLY owes a great share of its glory to Prof. Lai Oso. He was one of the reasons the department is rated one of the best. I join his many other students to mourn his passage and condole with his immediate family. Fare thee well, prof.”

“A reservoir of knowledge is gone, and it feels like one of the world’s great libraries has just been set ablaze. Professor Lai Oso, a true legend in the field of communication, has passed away. His contributions to the world of communication were immeasurable, and his impact on the lives of his students and colleagues will never be forgotten. May his soul rest in peace, and may his family and loved ones find comfort in the memories of his life. We will miss him dearly, but his legacy will continue to inspire us all,” another student wrote, Abdullahi Edun wrote.

Also, a student identified as Ajayi wrote, “Oh sad. Nigeria keeps killing its bests. Prof was helpful with my Masters Degree Thesis as our external examiner. Very thorough yet calm. Humble and cheerful. His jokes helped me brush off my pre-defence anxiety. His friendly posture was amazing. From MAPOLY to Crescent, UNILAG and Pan Atlantic University, I benefitted from his wealth of academic knowledge. Not to mention his many creative and constructively engaging public presentations. We will miss you sorely Prof. Journey well my mentor,”
