The one of many truck-inflicted tragedies which occurred on Sunday has stirred condemnations from different quarters as sympathisers expressed concerns over indifference from relevant and concerned authorities in proactively averting the tragedy.

Theliberationnews reported that the incident happened on Sunday afternoon at Ojuelegba, Surulere Area of Lagos State when a container-laden truck fell on a commercial minibus, better known as “Korope”, claiming the lives of nine passengers in the process instantly.

The preventable disaster was one of the many caused by trucks and tankers, which had claimed several innocent lives in Lagos and other states in the country without virtually no one getting punished or made to face the consequences in the past.

Some residents who reacted to the accident mounded blame on relevant authorities for failing to live up to their responsibilities.

Mr. Adekunle Ademola asked, “How would a truck be going with a container and the container is not well chained or tied up they ought to be arrested By the police instead of the police to arrest them they would be looking forward to Harassing those commercial bus okada keke drivers all in the name of 100
What a failed nation. 90 percent of the trucks with containers are not chained or locked very well they only placed them there and leave them.”

Mr. Steven Adekunle, said, “What happens to the laws regulating the movement of containers not moving during daytime? So many things are wrong with us in the state and country. It is so sad and unfortunate. Until it happens to a family member of a VIP, those in authority will not enforce the laws.

“The truth is most of these container trucks are rickety and cannot mount those bridges so most of the time, they roll back and cause accidents.

“Ordinarily, they are not even supposed to go through the bridges but area boys and extortion make them see bridges as alternatives.

“Until government agencies put a stop to extortion by non-state actors, we may soon record another of the same portion, even more.”

“That bridge has caused a lot of calamities…. The bridge isn’t straight at all yet these container pass there each min government is not concerned……. God hlp us…. Rip to them,” lamented, Mr. Emmanuel Toba

On his part, Mr. Ibrahim Kanabo called in government to restrict truck and tankers movement to night only, ” I think the govt should ban the movement of containers during the day, limit them to night shift with monitoring against smuggling. May the souls of the departed find peace with God, Ameen.”

Another sympathizer said, “May their souls rest in peace. Please can the Lagos State Government in the name of everything that’s Holy find a permanent solution these needless loss of innocent lives. 1. As the FRSC cannot rein in rickety Container bearing trucks, stop them from accessing the Bridge by constructing a huge iron bar at the entry points egress and ingress. Let all Container bearing trucks use the Road. 2. Clear illegal picking of Passengers throughout the length and breadth of the Road and rein in ubiquitous Conductors who force drivers to stop in the dangerous ear of the bridges.
These accidents occur regularly and it’s sad that the Lagos State Government seems to lack the solution to stop these unnecessary Human waste. Fashola will add that it doesn’t require Rocket Science. Lasg please act now.”
