Almost a decade after resigning from his position as the head of the Catholic Church due to deteriorating health, former Pope Benedict XVI has passed away at age 95.
He breathed his last at his Vatican Residence on Saturday morning.
“With sorrow, I inform you that the Pope Emeritus, Benedict XVI, passed away today at 9:34 in the Mater Ecclesiae Monastery in the Vatican,” Vatican spokesman Matteo Bruni said in a statement.
Pope Benedict XVI led the Catholic Church for less than eight years until, in 2013, he became the first Pope to resign since Gregory XII in 1415.
It was gathered that he spent his final years at the Mater Ecclesiae monastery within the walls of the Vatican.
Details later.
