18-year-old Jaylen Smith has set a new record in the history of United States as he becomes the youngest Black mayor following his victory at a run-off election.
Smith fended off competition from Nemi Matthews Sr. in a the election to emerge the mayor of Earle, Arkansas.
According to election results, Smith amassed 218 votes, compared to Matthews’ 139.
Elated Smith took to his Facebook page to announce his victory saying, saying: “Citizens of Earle, Arkansas, it’s official!! I am your newly elected Mayor of Earle, Arkansas… ‘It’s Time to Build a Better Chapter of Earle, Arkansas.’ I would like to thank all my supporters for stepping up getting people to the polls. I am truly grateful for you all.”
