For the second time in two weeks, the Nigerian Bar Association (NBA) is in the news for the wrong reasons, reports Theliberationnews.
The first scenario of shame was the melee that occurred at its just concluded national conference at which lawyers were accused of having stolen mobile phones. But this time around, a lawyer, Barrister Adekunle Owolabi was questionably removed from the official WhatsApp platform of the Ikeja Branch of the Nigerian Bar Association (NBA) for writing against the erroneous claims of Peter Obi, presidential candidate of the Labour Party (LP) where he said on a recent Lagos based television house program that he brought the famous International Brewery Limited ( IBL) to Ilesha, Osun state.
International Brewery Limited (IBL), Ilesha is a distillery company that produces the very popular brand of alcoholic drink known as Trophy Larger Beer. Its non alcoholic brand is called Dubic Malt.
Obi, while recently appearing on an Arise TV programme sensationally claimed, though erroneously upon fact checks by Theliberationnews, that he was the one that established IBL, IIesha.
From the chat pattern/sequence on the platform in possession of Theliberationnews, Owolabi, a legal practitioner, had responded to the claim by Peter Obi that he brought IBL to Iesha. A claim that Owolabi, an indigene of Osun State considers to be a lie from the pit of hell.
The legal practitioner, tracing the history of the company, which was established in 1971 by late industrial mogul, Chief Lawrence Omole, finally submitted on the NBA WhatsApp platform that Obi can lay claim to be a contributor to the company but saying he brought the company to Ilesha is a blatant lie.
Owolabi submitted that it is a big slap on the face of indigenes of the state and Nigerians in general that Obi aspires to lead to allow his deliberate misrepresentation of facts, simply put a lie, to go unchallenged, saying it offends the sensibilities of Osun state and Ijesha indigenes in particular.
Theliberationnews, upon investigation into the origin of IBL, IIesha, agrees with Owolabi’s assertion, made on the Ikeja NBA WhatsApp platform that Obi was still a 10-year old primary school pupil when late Chief Lawrence Omole founded IBL, saying Obi should have been decorous in his statement on air.
The next thing was for Owolabi’s name to be in decorously removed from the Ikeja NBA WhatsApp platform.
Theliberationnews gathered, authoritatively that the person that yanked off Owolabi’s name from the WhatsApp platform of NBA was one of its four admins.
Theliberationnews investigation further revealed that the admin’s name behind this uncivilized act is one Marvin Ibem Esq., an Igbo man with phone number 08036455099.
Owolabi’s name was removed on Friday, 2 September, 2022, the day he posted the reaction.
No reason was given for his removal and he was not informed until he discovered personally on Sunday, September 4, 2022 when he wanted to post comments on the platform, Theliberationnews sources revealed.
Upon attempts to post comments, Owolabi, on Sunday morning was told, according to Theliberationnews sources: “You can’t send messages into this group because you’re no longer a participant, +234 803 645 5099 removed you.”
It was this message that heralded Owolabi’s removal from contributing to the platform, again.
When contacted by Theliberationnews, Owolabi vowed to challenge what he described as an injustice meted out to him by our reputed professional platform through the political overzealousness of a supposed professional colleague serving as admin on the platform.
“I’m going to challenge this injustice when work resumed on Monday. Definitely I won’t allow this injustice that l vehemently detest for trying to fetter my right to freedom of expression, to stand,” he said.
Attempts by Theliberationnews to get the side of the chairman of Ikeja NBA on this matter before publication proved abortive because his mobile line was not going through when called.
