Few hours after Rivers State governor, Nyesom Wike led his camp in the Peoples Democratic Party, PDP to a meeting with former President Olusegun Obasanjo and Labour Party presidential candidate, Peter Obi, his team has also met with the Peoples Democratic Party, PDP presidential candidate, Atiku Abubakar with smiles evident at the end of the encounter.
The meeting in a London hotel involved Atiku, Governors Wike, Seyi Makinde of Oyo State, Sam Ortom of Benue and Okeize Ikpeazu of Abia State.
As earlier reported by theliberationnews, Wike’s earlier meeting with Obasanjo and Obi was not unconnected with the 2023 presidential elections.
Details of the latest meeting was still sketchy as at the time of filing this report but the meeting is coming against the background of the lingering crisis in the party sparked by the alleged hanky-panky that characterized the presidential primary of the PDP which Wike lost out.
Besides the claim that the convention was twisted by the party’s decision to allow Governor Aminu Waziri Tambuwal step down for Atiku, the Wike team also claim that the promise by the presidential candidate to make Wike his running mate was breached.
The Wike team is demanding as its minimum demand that the national chairman of the party, Senator Iyorcha Ayu should step down.
The demand is upon the claim that all the major positions in the party including the presidential candidate, national chairman and chairman of the Board of Trustees are all from the North.
The meeting between Atiku and the Wike team is supposed to soften the crisis and allow the party to forge ahead as a united body and the prospects for such were rekindled with the smiles that were seen on the faces of the different camps at the end of their encounter on Thursday.
